The public accountancy profession in Malaysia is regulated and governed by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (“MIA”) pursuant to the Accountants Act 1967 (the “Act”). The business community is reminded that, as stipulated by the Act, accounting services can only be provided strictly by individuals holding a public practicing license and accounting firms registered with the MIA.
The business community is therefore, urged to exercise caution in dealings with unlicensed individuals, whether operating independently (freelance) or through a corporate entity, offering bogus and illegal accountancy services to the public. Engaging with unlicensed individuals and unregistered entities can prevent the business community in Malaysia from receiving the proper care, confidentiality, expertise and due diligence mandated by the Act. Further, disclosing confidential accounting data, taxation matters, personal and trade information to wrongful parties can be subjected to misuse, unwarranted disclosure or permanent loss of accounting records that unlikely to be compensated by professional indemnity insurance that are normally offered by licensed and registered accounting firm in Malaysia.
